Bumps on Your Tattoo? Here’s What Might Be Going On
So you’re healing your new tattoo, everything looks great — then suddenly, you notice little bumps or raised spots starting to form.
Don’t panic! This is actually a common healing reaction, and in many cases, it’s caused by using too much aftercare ointment.
Let’s break down what’s happening and how to fix it 👇
Why Bumps Happen
Your skin needs to breathe to heal properly. When too much ointment is applied, it can trap heat, sweat, and bacteria — essentially suffocating the tattoo and clogging pores. This can lead to:
Small, raised bumps or pimples
A shiny or tacky surface
Delayed healing or scabbing
Most often, it’s not an allergic reaction or infection — just over-moisturization.
How to Fix It
Stop using the ointment for a few days.
Gently wash the tattoo with mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap and warm water once or twice a day. Pat it dry — don’t rub.Let it breathe.
Skip the ointment for 2-5 days and allow the tattoo to “dry out”. If it starts to feel tight, you can switch to a lightweight, fragrance-free lotion like Aquaphor Healing Lotion or Lubriderm (unscented).Don’t pick or scratch.
Those little bumps will go away on their own once your pores have a chance to clear up. Picking can cause scarring or ink loss.Avoid wrapping or re-bandaging.
Unless your artist specifically instructs otherwise, keep it open to air. Fresh oxygen = faster healing.
When to Contact Your Artist
If you notice anything unusual or spreading redness, pus, pain, or warmth, that could be a sign of irritation or infection.
Reach out to your artist (or a doctor if severe) to get guidance right away — but in most cases, simply cutting back on the ointment clears it up fast.
Our Pro Tip 💡
A little goes a long way. You should apply just enough ointment to give the skin a light sheen — not a thick, greasy layer. If it’s shiny and slick, it’s too much. The tiniest thinnest layer possible is your best bet!
